People are often afraid of acting out of character. Even saying something out of character causes people to worry.
But what is character? And why does it matter?
Your character is something put there by other people. It’s in their minds.
You acting differently is just you acting outside of the constraints that someone else has placed on their interpretation of your personality. Kane SimmsTweet this phrase
But their interpretation of your personality is their issue, not yours.
If you change or grow or develop and act differently, that’s not your problem. That’s your duty.
They’ll need to go through the motions themselves to reframe their understanding of who you are.
And, even if they don’t, then so what? What exactly is the worst thing they can do if you act out of character?
To become the person you want to be, you need to literally become a different person. You need to break through people’s perceptions of who you are and how you act.
You need to act out of character for long enough for people to understand that this is now your character.
If you don’t do that, you’ll always be the same and never moving forwards.
So, at some point, you need to come out of the closet and say to the world ‘this is who I am now, fuck you if you don’t like it.’
That could be painful in the short term, especially if you need to act out of character in front of someone who you’ve known a long time like your parents or friends or your boss or something.
But what choice do you have?
Stay put or move forward.
